Sport is fascinating – full of emotion and tension. It unites people across language and cultural borders. This is why SRG is committed to sport on a broad scale.

Sport is an important part of SRG's public service mandate: SRG with its enterprise units SRF, RTS, RSI and RTR is focusing on Swiss athletes at the national and international level and offers its audience a varied range of sports programmes via all vectors (radio, TV and online) tailored to Swiss needs with highlights from Switzer-land and abroad. Sport is pure tension: it allows spectators to cheer on the participants and provides emotional moments.

Varied sports coverage

SRG holds a leading position in terms of sports journalism. Sport is a key element of the programme strategy and thus also of SRG's programmes. SRG regularly reports on more than 60 different sports in its radio and TV programmes and on its multimedia platforms. And with its sports strategy it endeavours to offer an attractive daily offering of sports programmes that appeal to the public and are in line with the market. In order to reach this goal SRG – within the scope of its programming, economic, production-related and organizational capabili-ties – meets the expectations of the Swiss audience with sport-related content via all vectors according to the three-pillar model.

The three-pillar model

The various types of sport and sporting events are rated according to journalistic, programme-related, financial, sports-policy and strategic criteria. Here it is crucial that the focus be not on individual disciplines or events but that a balance be achieved between the three pillars on which SRG's sports offering is based. Sport is an inte-gral component of implementing the public service. The order of the pillars basically reflects their priority.

They include athletes such as Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Nicola Spirig, Lara Gut, Simon Ammann, Tom Lüthi, Dario Cologna, Fabian Cancellara, as well as sports such as rowing and equestrian events. They include events such as ski races in Adelboden and Wengen, World Class Zurich, Athletissima Lausanne, Tour de Suisse, Tour de Romandie, equestrian events, Spengler Cup, national football and ice hockey championships, Golf European Masters Crans-Montana, Rowing World Lucerne, Beach Volleyball Gstaad, Tennis Swiss Indoors or the Swiss wrestling and Alpine games festival. These include highlights of world-class sport such as the Olympic Games, World Cup and European Football Championship, UEFA Champions and Europa League, Formula 1, Skiing World Championships, Tour de France, Athletics World Championships and –European Championships or tennis Grand Slam tournaments.

The sports coverage on SRG's platforms aims to present the sporting reality from a Swiss perspective. The relevant content is prepared for the Swiss audience in line with the respective vector. SRG thus contributes to the identity and cohesion of Switzerland with special events and its own productions.

Business Unit Sport Organizational Unit

SRG's Business Unit Sport (BUS) is a national, convergent centre of excellence for the areas of productions, large-scale projects, sports rights as well as marketing and events covering tasks such as services, monitoring and controlling. It is responsible for implementing the sports strategy in SRG's sports programmes: on the one hand, the BUS acquires all sports rights and manages the production of national sports events on a centralized basis for SRG and its enterprise units. On the other hand it organizes and coordinates international large-scale projects such as the Olympic Games or World and European championships for all enterprise units and their vectors. In addition the BUS handles the national sport budgets and ensures an appropriate presence at the particular location. 

Sporting challenges

  • Sports diversity: The significance of telegenic sports is increasing steadily. So-called premium sports such as Formula 1 and football and premium events such as the Olympic Games, World Cup and European Champi-onships or the UEFA Champions League will continue to expand their leadership positions. Against the back-drop of this globalized sports market traditional sports such as athletics, cycling, equestrian events, rowing, gymnastics or swimming are losing international importance. SRG is countering this trend on Swiss territory with its sports strategy as it wants to continue offering its audience a wide range of sports programmes and increase the variety of Swiss events with national and international appeal.
  • Transparency in the event of abuse and fraud: SRG's sports journalists maintain the necessary
    distance to the events and athletes. They report in a transparent, critical, objective and unprejudiced manner – including on negative events and phenomena relating to sport such as stadium riots, fraud, bribery and doping offences.
